Blank Canvas (Big Easy Book 1)
Jennifer is a buttoned up professional, trying to reinvent herself after a divorce. In her plans for reinvention, she chooses to get a tattoo to signify her new outlook on life. When she meets her big, bad tattoo artist Caliph, can’t help feeling both attracted, and intimidated. Something in each calls to the other, and they chose to see where the attraction leads.
I really enjoyed this novella. Jennifer’s insecurity felt realistic for someone coming out of a long relationship under those circumstances. It was also nice for a heroine to be over 40, attractive, and sexily imperfect. I didn't feel sorry for her, just rooted for her to win. Caliph was a great example of strong hero that though a dominant alpha male, was not douchy at all. This was a complete alpha-hole free zone.
I confess to normally entering shorter books expecting to just "like it". The lower page count of this one couldn't prevent the awesome from breaking through. Since the heroine is a little bit older, this also works for those into cougar themes, which normally isn't my thing by the way.

In this story, readers are introduced to Caliph Lewis and his family. Future books in the Big Easy series will feature stories about other siblings from the close-knit, fun-loving, rather unconventional Lewis family. (tattoos, New Orleans, BDSM, bondage, submission, workplace, alpha male)
Blank Canvas was previously part of the Midnight Ink anthology.
I liked this story. Jennifer was dumped by her husband and just looking for a little change in her life. She meets Caliph who does her tattoo. They decide to spend some time together. She is older than him and feels like she isn't worthy because of her ex. He introduces her to her wild side. Together they explore submission, spankings, wax play, etc. Erotic and fascinating story.
What a great intro to the world of Mari Carr! This book was sexy and hot, but it also had heart. I loved it!
When I was reading this book, I had a man's face in my head, except that he wasn't a tattoo artist, but a barber. Anyway, this had never happened so I thought I'd mention it. On to the actual review ;)
I love the inquisitiveness of Caliph. Somehow, he was able to read Jennifer's face as if they'd known each other for years. I think that was amazing, and I would have been mad if Jennifer let a gem like him go.
I loved Jennifer's innocence. It was a great contrast to Caliph's wild side. The little bits of BDSM in this story was so refreshing as well. Because Jennifer was new to everything, there was considerable communication and education, but at the same time, Caliph pushed her and she didn't disappoint.
I also appreciated that they were both very direct and didn't beat around a bush. They liked each other? They went on a date ASAP. They were hot for each other? They scheduled a little date for that, too. There was no playing hard to get and I liked that.
Not only was Caliph super hot and talented, he was also very understanding. Knowing about Jennifer's divorce, he was sensitive when it came to certain things like her insecurities, but he also knew that she had more potential than she realized. Reading that discovery was so satisfying.
One thing that did put me off in this book was the use of mineral oil. I don't like mineral oil, among other things, so sue me ;)
I think it's safe to say that I'd be reading more Mari Carr books in the future.
